Restore vintage cars with 3D-printed MJF parts

2023-10-25

We use our 3D printing resources and expertise to produce one-off or low-volume parts for Model E cars, including air conditioning and heating ducts. Crucially, 3D printing allows us to significantly reduce the turnaround time for its repaired vehicles.

Since we started manufacturing with HP multi jet fusion technology, we have been impressed with the improvements in the appearance and durability of these parts, and HP's 3D platform has always provided the ideal finish, which is very important to our process. The heating pipes need to be attractive enough to sit on the dashboard, and these components match the special qualities of our classic cars. Other benefits we see include that we can now create a greater range of shapes using HP multi jet fusion 3D printing, as well as reducing weight in the materials provided. This adds value to customers who are keen to keep their parts as light as possible.

HP's highly automated multi jet fusion process has benefited from graphite additive manufacturing both in terms of workflow and in terms of turnaround time. Auto restorers have faced challenges sourcing certain parts because of the low number of parts it requires. Only four or five E-types are produced each year, and these parts often have to meet different technical specifications due to model changes. In other words, the number of parts that need to be customized is small, sometimes only one per year. Multi jet fusion 3d printing has proven to be the only financially viable production method.

HP's multi jet fusion 3D printing solutions capabilities are ideal for producing customized, high-quality 3D automotive parts, offer many solutions to the automotive industry, and we're excited to see how it can help shape the future of automotive manufacturing in the coming years, leveraging the efficient, flexible design and customization that HP multi jet fusion 3D solutions provide for their market-leading custom vehicles
