Plastic Injection Molding Process

Plastic injection molding is a process in which molten plastic material is injected into a mold, which is cooled and solidified to form the desired shape. The process is widely used in all walks of life, including automotive, electronics, medical devices and other fields. Lori's injection molding process includes detailed design analysis and expert mold production.  When the plastic injection mold tool is carefully designed and manufactured, you can get the customize the plastic injection molding parts for you unlimited. plastic injection molding consists of the following steps

01

Raw material preparation

Select the appropriate plastic raw material and add it to the feed mouth of the injection molding machine.

02

Melting

Through heating and friction to make plastic raw materials into a molten state that can be injected into the mold.

03

Injection

The molten plastic raw material is injected into the mold through the syringe.

04

Post-treatment
  1. cleaning, finishing and other post-treatment operations on the finished product.

Plastic Injection Molding Materials

  • When it comes to plastic injection molding, we have more than 100 plastics to choose from, and when you customize your injection molding project, we can guide you in choosing the best material for your application.  Here are some commonly used plastic materials.
  • Nylon, ABS plastic, Polycarbonate (PC), PC-ABS plastic,
  • Acetal Copolymer, Acetal Homopolymer,
  • Engineered Thermoplastic Polyurethane (ETPU),
  • High Density Polyethylene, Liquid-crystal polymer,
  • Low-density polyethylene, Linear low-density polyethylene,
  • Acrylic (PMMA), Polystyrene (PS), Polypropylene (PP),
  • Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK)
  • All of above plastic materials are the plastics for injection molding that have different strengths and applications, making them ideal for injection molding. Please contact us to learn more about our injection molding materials

Surface Finishes of Plastic Injection Molding

In order to increase the life of the plastic injection molded parts and improve its beauty, we generally carry out secondary processing on its surface and   improve the quality and beauty of the prototype and the plastic injection molding parts produced. The surface finish methods of injection molding are as follows.

Surface Finishes

1. Surface machining.  The effect of plastic mold processing is to make the surface smooth, bright and beautiful;  The means used are grinding, polishing and so on.

2. Surface plating finish.  Its effect is decoration, beautification, anti-aging, corrosion resistance;  The means of plastic shell spraying are coating, printing, film, hot stamping and so on.

3.  Surface decoration finish.  The effect of plastic shell injection molding is to make the surface wear-resistant, anti-aging, metallic luster and beautiful;  The methods used are thermal spraying, electroplating, ion plating and so on.

How Does Plastic Injection Molding Work?

As a mature plastic processing technology, plastic injection molding has broad development prospects.  With the emergence of new technologies, new materials and new needs, plastic injection molding will continue to adapt to market changes and innovative development to provide higher quality plastic products for industrial manufacturing and consumers.  Plastic Injection molding is a plastic manufacturing process in which molten plastic material is injected into a mold and then cooled and solidified.   Then how does plastic injection molding work, you can refer to the following content.

The principle of plastic injection molding

The basic working principles are as follows.

1. Heating and melting: heating plastic particles or powder to a molten state usually needs to be carried out in the injection machine.  After heating, the plastic becomes viscous and flowing, and can be pushed into the mold by the injection machine.

2. Fill the mold: the molten plastic material is injected into the mold through the injection machine.  The injection machine applies high pressure to make the plastic flow fill the entire mold chamber.

3. Cooling and curing: the plastic material in the mold needs to be cooled to make it solidify.  The cooling time and temperature depend on factors such as the type and thickness of the material.  The specific design of the mold can also affect the cooling time and quality.

4. Mold opening and taking out: After cooling and curing, open the mold and take out the formed part.  There are usually some release agents on the mold to help the formed part easily detach from the mold.

5. Removal of burrs, trimming and processing: After taking out the molded part, it is necessary to remove excess plastic materials and burrs, and trim and process the molded part.  This can be done by hand or machine.

6. Inspection and packaging: Finally, the finished product needs to be inspected to ensure that its quality meets the requirements, and then packaging and transportation.

The principle of plastic injection molding is relatively simple, but to obtain high-quality molded parts, you need to master some skills and operating methods.  For example, parameters such as pressure, temperature and flow rate of the injection machine need to be controlled to ensure the accuracy and quality of the injection.  Mold design and manufacturing also need to consider factors such as materials, processing accuracy and the life cycle of the mold.
