When discussing CNC machine tools, it's essential to understand the various types of tools used in processing. These tools are typically classified by their specific uses and methods of processing, including turning tools, hole processing tools, milling tools, broaching tools, threading tools, gear tools, automatic lines, CNC machine tools, and reamers.
Beyond these general categories, CNC machine tools can be classified in several other ways:
1. By Material: High-speed steel tools, carbide tools, ceramic tools, cubic boron nitride tools, and diamond tools.
2. By Structure: Integral tools, insert tools, machine-clip tools, and compound tools.
3. By Standardization: Standard tools and non-standard tools.
Introduction to Commonly Used Tools
The most commonly used tool in CNC machining is the milling cutter, a versatile multi-edge rotary tool available in many varieties. Depending on its use, milling cutters are categorized as follows:
1. Surface Processing: Cylindrical surface milling cutters, end milling cutters, etc.
2. Groove Processing: End milling cutters, T-cutters, angle milling cutters, etc.
3. Forming Surface Milling: Convex and concave semi-circular milling cutters, and cutters for other complex forming surfaces.
Milling generally offers higher productivity, although it may result in a rougher machined surface.
Another widely used tool is the turning tool, which is essential for metal cutting. Turning tools are used on lathes to process outer circles, end planes, threads, inner holes, and for grooving and cutting. They are classified based on their structure into integral turning tools, welding assembly turning tools, and mechanically clamped blade turning tools. Mechanically clamped blade turning tools are further divided into machine tool turning tools and indexable turning tools. These tools offer stable cutting performance, and since they do not require sharpening, they are increasingly popular in modern production.
